Sonatas & variations by Martinu and Kabalevsky

Norwegian cellist Øystein Birkeland (b. 1962) has made an international career for himself and his cello, both as a soloist and a chamber musician. Birkeland’s interpretations are shaped with integrity and ability; a combination that communicates wonderfully with the audience.

No wonder then, that the music of Bohuslav Martinu and Dmitri Kabalevsky for cello and piano has inspired Birkeland to enter the recording studio. He has invited pianist Håvard Gimse (b. 1966) to join him. Together they have made a CD with music that reflects both absolute bliss, and the deepest tragedy. 1.mvt. of the Kabalevsky Sonata exemplifies the latter, but listen to the way Martinu plays around with a Rossini Theme! This piece is written for Piatigorsky.
