Kåre Nordstoga

Kåre Nordstoga (b. 1954) was appointed part-time assistant organist at Oslo Cathedral in 1984. The position was later extended to a full-time post and he is now the Cathedral’s principal organist, specialising in organ recitals.

Nordstoga grew up at Notodden. It was here he first learned to play the organ, studying under Harald Aune and Odd Jacob Unhammer. At the Norwegian Academy of Music his tutors included Kaare Ørnung, Søren Gangfløt, Magne Elvestrand and Bjørn F. Boysen. Following his debut at Oslo Cathedral in 1978, he studied with David Sanger in London.
In addition to his work as accompanist for the Cathedral choir, his repertoire includes a wide range of organ works, the emphasis being on such Classical masters as Bach, Mozart, Franck, Widor and Messiaen. Between 1990 and 1992 he gave a series of 30 Saturday recitals where large audiences heard him perform all of Bach’s organ works, a feat that he repeats within the Bach-year 2000. His concert appearances have also meant him visiting the majority of European countries.

Nordstoga lectured at the Norwegian State Academy of Music for a number of years until 1994, when he was appointed to a full-time post at Oslo Cathedral.
