The Norwegian Chopin

Only 19 years old, more or less directly from his debut as a concert pianist in his hometown of Trondheim, Thomas D. A. Tellefsen traveled to remote Paris to further his studies in music. As Chopin’s apprentice Thomas evolved both as a composer and a pianist. The two became friends and played a lot together, both in private and in public, including a tour of London. When Chopin died, Tellefsen took over some of his most profiled and well-off students.

Tellefsen himself was a true virtuoso of the piano – something the piano parts of his works also verifies. If you put this fact together with the very interesting combination of continental and Norwegian influences that characterizes Tellefsen’s music, pianist Einar Steen-Nøkleberg stands out as the ideal ‘Tellefsen ambassador’ today. His international success with recordings of the complete works of Grieg, Sæverud and Halfdan Kjerulf (Simax 2001 PSC 1225) is really outstanding. On this recording he is joined by violinist Atle Sponberg and cellist Øystein Birkeland, and together they give the fresh and romantic air of Tellefsen’s music the best presentation possible.

Immensely talented, Thomas quickly made his way to the inner circles of this musical metropolis, and in 1844 he was introduced to Fréderic Chopin.
