Norwegian composer Gunnar Sønstevold

Gunnar Sønstevold is perhaps most famous for his work as a film composer. His music for several well-known Norwegian movies, such as “Ni liv” (Nine Lives), “Englandsfarere” (We leave for England), “Kampen om tungtvannet” (The Battle for Heavy Water) and “Det brenner i natt” (The Flame), demonstrates his exceptional ability as a music dramatist. But his chamber musical works also shows a composer of a severe and exacting perfectionist.

From the lively games in the back streets of Bergen to attempts to attain the long dissonant phrasing of Fartein Valen – within such a compass rings the music of Gunnar Sønstevold. Listening to the works on this disc we associate his music at times with jazz and at times with the Christmas tune of “Jingle Bells”, at other times with Edvard Grieg´s “Solveig´s Song” or Fartein Valen´s “Churchyard by the Sea”. Performed by Sweden´s foremost ensemble of its type, the Stockholm Philharmonic Wind Quintet, with guest performances by Elisabeth Sønstevold on harp, this album is a perfect introduction to the chamber musical works of a composer who has had a considerable impact both on the Norwegian art musical world and Norwegian entertainment music.
