Valkyrien Allstars´ Gives New Life to Old Traditions
If you have any preconceptions as to what Norwegian folk music is like, the Valkyrien Allstars will put to rest any clichéd sounds and images you might hold! Their music is based on traditional Norwegian tunes, but infused with rock and pop sensibilities that make them accessible to audiences beyond traditional folk. The texts on their second release, To Måner (Two moons), are inspired by Knut Hamsun, Henrik Ibsen and William Shakespeare – all wrapped up in fresh, folky tunes. The release was nominated for Spellemannprisen (The Norwegian Grammy Award). The group’s three core musicians each play the Hardanger fiddle, a traditional Norwegian stringed instrument very similar to the violin, though with eight or nine strings rather than four as on a standard violin. Bowed, plucked or used for percussive effects, the instrument’s versatility is perfectly matched against the rock dynamics of the accompanying rhythm section.
