Genre bending traditional joik

kr 139

The versatile guitarist Frode Barth teams up with yoiker Ellen A. Oskal on this album containing personified yoiks. Featuring artists such as Manu Katché, Palle Mikkelborg, Trygve Seim and Anders Røyne.
In Northern Sámi areas, most yoiks are personal, that is, tied to a specific person. On this album you will find personified yoiks that reflect individuals. Each yoik bears the name of the person to whom it is dedicated. A yoik is considered the finest gift a person can receive.
Frode Barth puts it like this: “It has been a pleasure to collaborate with the yoiker Ellen A. Oskal-Spein for several years. She grew up in a family that keeps the tradition alive. She has won the Sámi Grand Prix, a contest consisting of two separate parts, a yoik part and a song part. She is a performer with a powerful expression. I have joined forces with her to the best of my ability, offering my musical world and my background from a variety of genres such as rock, jazz and contemporary music. I have been given the freedom to let the yoik tradition encounter an innovative openness. This has been a crucial element in creating this album.”
