Sanger is considered one of the best that Lillebjørn Nilsen has ever done, and the album was indeed nominated for a Norwegian Grammy (Spellemannsprisen). And there is no doubt that the album is of very high quality: The release is characterized by strong lyrics and sober melodies. Nilsen’s airy and gentle voice creates a successful contrast with the heavier and more raw instrumentals. In his texts, Nilsen picks up elements from myths and legends, art and politics, and gives these themes a musical expression that is more rocky and less acoustic than on many of his other releases. There are famous songs like "Kjærlighet og Karlsons lim", "Troll!" and "Hav og himmel" that sings the story about Skagen painter Peder Severin Krøyer. The album also includes "Se deg aldri tilbake", a tune that was written by Lillebjørn Nilsen and Arild Andersen to the Norwegian film Blücher (1988).
