The folk music of Trøndelag

Trøndelag is an area of extremley complex traditions, where a great variety of forms, genres and types of folk music converge. On this compilation, some of the most spellbinding music of the area is collected and presented. With regard to instrumental music, the ordinary fiddle, rather than the Hardanger fiddle, dominates. Even though the fiddle tradition disappeared almost completely in some districts due to the religious revivals of the second half of the 1800s, most districts have had a fiddle tradition present well into the 20th century. However, the fiddle is not the only instrument represented on this compilation – other important instruments within the folk musical tradition of Trøndelag, such as bukkehorn and Meråker clarinett, as well as the areas rich song traditions, are presented here.

“Folkemusikk frå Trøndelag” shows how rich and varied Trøndelags folk musical tradition really is, and we are presented with a variety of dance music, such as pols, springar, vals and reinlender, performed by some of Norway´s most prominent folk musicians. This compilation is undoubtedly an absolutely essential documentation of one of Norway´s most interesting and wonderful regional folk musical expressions, and a necessary accession to anyone interested in this country´s unique musical tradition.
