Norwegian Lieder

Born in Berlin, the German texts are especially close to Isa. Her PhD at the Norwegian Academy of Music focused on the Norwegian lieder tradition, studying in particular the works in this genre by Halfdan Kjerulf, Agathe Backer Grøndahl, Otto Winter Hjelm and Ludvig Irgens-Jensen. But there is nothing academic about this music or the performances: Waldabendlust (Enchantment of nightfall in the forest) is filled with sensitive and tender songs. Isa’s readings are blessed with here flexible musical sense and light and delicate soprano voice, capturing to perfection the texture and mood in these songs. When presented in collaboration with such a stunning musician as Sveinung Bjelland, discovering these hidden treasures is a true delight.

Of particular interest is the first recording of the original version of Ludvig Irgens-Jensens song cycle Japanishe Frühling (op.2), for soprano and piano. Sveinung Bjelland has together with the composer’s son reconstructed the parts of the piano part that were incomplete in the manuscripts. The result is very transparent and lucid, perhaps bringing the musical expression and even closer to the Japanese lyrics in Bethke’s translations than in the version with orchestra. (Of course the orchestral version was recently released on PSC1164.)
