The songs of Norwegian composer Christian Sinding (1856-1941) interpreted by
baritone Per Vollestad in premiere recordings.

Christian Sinding’s music was well known throughout Europe in the early years of the previous century. It was said in its day that his pianopiece “Frülingsraushen” was the piece most played, and that Edition Peters really could not get the printed music shipped fast enough for the hungry audiences. Like Knut Hamsun, Sinding’s sympathies in the early stages of World War II branded both him and his work for many decades, especially in Norway. Now, more than 60 years after these events, it is possible to look into the art of Christian Sinding.

38 songs

This first volume in a series of three is an integrated part in Per Vollestad’s doctorate-thesis at the Norwegian Academy of Music on the Lieder of Christian Sinding. He is working his way through the manuscripts left by Sinding, and has found song-cycles thought to be lost forever. Most of the 38 songs on this disc have never been recorded before, some, like the Songs from the Arabic story of Antar and Abla, have never been performed after their premiere (1882) when the harsh criticism allegedly made Sinding burn the originals. Over 250 songs have been found, and Vollestad gives his audience a continuous account of the various cycles. On this CD we find songs to the Knaben Wunderhorn texts and poems by Vilhelm Krag, Ivar Aasen and Anders Hovden.

Per Vollestad

Vollestad is highly regarded as an interpreter of Lieder, having made several recordings of Schumann, Schubert and Wolf. He has the capacity to envisage the greatness of Sinding to the listener, bringing this repertoire back onto the international stage.
