Unconventional and diverse contemporary music

Dorothy Dorow, who always shuns the familiar and well-trodden paths, performs, together with cellist Aage Kvalbein, a varied selection of contemporary music for soprano and cello. James Wilson´s ”Runes”, composed specifically for Dorothy Dorow, with its magical qualities, are characterised by spare textures, which accounts for the solo cello accompaniment, and a free form. Øistein Sommerfeldt, being a former student of Fartein Valen and Nadia Boulanger, explores the theme of love in his work “Om Kjærligheten” (“About Love”), based on Stein Mehren´s poems “Toward a World of Light” and “Illusions in a Mirror”. Jacqueline Fontyn´s “Pro & Anti Verbs” is a humorous and simple collection of small pieces, undoubtedly expertly performed by the duo.

The traditional English song “I will give my love an apple”, arranged by Dorow herself, retains the very English atmosphere of the wistful melody in its almost unadorned simplicity. In contrast, Erik Bergman´s more epic – being based on the Finnish national epic “Kalevala” – “Lament and Incantation”, conjures up a mood both secretive and threatening with the cello underlining the weird, mysterious atmosphere with ghostly instrumental techniques or dramatic violence. Besides the for many unknown names among the composers on this album, Dorow and Kvalbein also performs three songs by George Gershwin, summing up an unusual and rewarding recital in an appropriately unconventional way.
