This disc presents remarkably inventive and well-written new repertoire for flute and piano. Interpreted by performers who know and understand the nature of the music, eager and capable of meeting the technical demands – this is an exciting delight.
Serious fun…
Jostein Stalheim has been labelled a modern exponent for a Haydn-esque elegance, and Hidden Music (2003) is brilliantly conceived in a sort of rondo form. The title work of the album, Chromos (1999) by Ivar Lunde Jr,. is a flighty and impressionistic piece. The (1999) is typical of the mature style of Edvard Hagerup Bull.
With his Moments, Olav Berg touches on the improvisational in his music. Knut Vaage’s Fortuna is written, as indeed is Hidden Music, in close collaboration with the performers on this release. The music has the ambience of serious playfulness, the first movement resembling a jigsaw puzzle for flute and the piano.
