Trondheim Symphony Orchestra (TSO) has enjoyed a long musical tradition. Until the beginning of the 19th century, Trondheim was a centre for sacred music, with many significant musicians settling there. Along with the expanding European musical culture, several music societies were formed. TSO was founded in 1909. The development of the orchestra gained impetus with the jubilee of St. Olav in 1930. The foundation of the Trondheim Chamber Orchestra in 1947 signified the beginning of the modern professional orchestra. In more recent times, the TSO, with its 73 musicians, has established a solid position as an inspiring impulse not only for the local musical life, but also for the entire country. Successful tours of high artistic quality in Germany/Austria, Spain and the Czech Republic have given the orchestra a firm international reputation. The TSO has recorded works by Halvorsen, Svendsen, Irgens-Jensen, Madsen, Borgstrøm and Okkenhaug for Simax Classics. 2006
