The Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces (FSMK) is Norway’s largest professional wind band, employing 39 full-time musicians. FSMK is based in Oslo and is the most prestigious of the bands of the Norwegian Armed Forces. The band was founded in 1817 and is located at Akershus Fortress in central Oslo. The band participates in parades and ceremonies that are arranged by the Royal Court, the Government and the Armed Forces. These engagements have led to touring throughout Norway and abroad. In addition, the band has an extensive concert schedule in the Oslo area, under both its own auspices and those of other institutions. FSMK has strong relations with the Norwegian National Opera, Norwegian Academy of Music, Akershus Fortress Foundation for Art and Culture, Oslo Chamber Music Festival, the Chief Municipal Education Officer in Oslo and “Ny Musikk”, the Norwegian section of the International Society for Contemporary Music. The band maintains a very high artistic level and mastery of most genres, classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and popular music. FSMK works with renowned conductors, both Norwegian and foreign, on a project basis. The highly renowned Ole Kristian Ruud has been the artistic leader/manager since 2006. The Staff Band has made several recordings over the past years, and has consistently received critical acclaim. Sept 2010
