Solo Cissokho

Solo Cissokho (born 1963 in Ziguinchor, Casamance) is a Norwegian/Senegalese Jazz- and Mbalaxmusician. Cissokho has roots from a Senegalese griot family which also includes the musicians Kausu Kouyate and Seckou Keita, and following the family tradition he learned to play the Kora at a very young age. Cissokho has roots from a Senegalese griot family which also includes the musicians Kausu Kouyate and Seckou Keita, and following the family tradition he learned to play the Kora at a very young age. He also plays djembe, guitar and bass. Earlier Cissokho lived in France and England, and played in the group Jalikunda, consisting of members from you the Cissokho family. They performed among other places at Glastonbury Festival. He also worked with the musicians Touré Kunda and Ali Farka Touré. In 1995 Solo Cissokho moved to Norway, and in the fall of 1996 he recorded the album «Frå Senegal til Setesdal» with Kouame Sereba, Kirsten Bråten Berg and Bjørgulv Straume. After a spontaneous jam session with the Swedish folk musician Ellika Frisell in 1998 the album «Tretakt/Takissaba» was made. The album won the BBC World Music Award in the category Boundary Crossing. In 2003 the group Cissokho System released the album Kaira. This group consisted of Solo & Aliou Cissokho, Kossa Diomande, Olav Torget, Tonny Kluften and Harald Skullerud.
