Lasse Thoresen (b. 1949) received a graduate degree in composition from the Oslo Music Conservatory, where he studied under Finn Mortensen. He then studied electronic music and composition under Werner Kaegi at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Thoresen has been teaching aural analysis of musical structures and composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music since 1975, from 1988 as Professor of composition. Thoresen has also developed a theory of emergent musical forms and an extensive conceptual structure for analyzing music-as-heard.

Thoresen has received a number of important awards: the Norwegian Society of Composers’ Work of the Year several times; the Lindeman Award for his integral work as a composer (1987). In 2001, he received Prix Jacques DURAND from Institut de France, Academie des Beaux Arts for his music. He has received commissions from all major symphony orchestras in Norway, and from a number of leading ensembles and soloists. In 2002 he received the Foundation Samii-Housseinpour Prize (Belgium), and in 2003 he received the Edvard Prize for Chases, Cattle Calls and Charts (Løp, lokk og linjar) for sinfonietta and folk singer. He was ‘compositeur en residence’ for three years in Radio France’s Festival Presénces (2004-2006). His music has absorbed influences from archaic Norwegian folk music and ‘ethnomusic’ in general, from French spectral music and ‘Musique Concrete’, and from Harry Partch’s tonal system “Just Intonation”.
