As a child of Romanticism, Grieg considered his romances among his most important works, of which he added a long series of masterpieces to the genre. He made folk music a close companion and succeeded in uniting it with the framework of conservatory music, with a result of often a hypnotic effect. For over an hour, the singer Per Vollestad and the pianist Sigmund Hjelset treats us with amazing performances of a range of Grieg´s romances on this album. Together they perform Grieg´s music for poems by writers such as H.C. Andersen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Henrik Ibsen, Holger Drachmann and John Paulsen – from the endearing works in Op. 5 to the meditative works of Op. 70.
