The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1912 and today comprises 85 musicians. Through its long and rich history it maintains a special place in Sweden’s cultural life. Both tradition and new thinking dominate the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra’s history. The main repertoire consists of the great romantic era composers from Beethoven to Mahler but importance is also placed on the performance of contemporary and Swedish/ Nordic music. In the Autumn of 2008 the orchestra recorded the music to the first opera designed solely for the Internet: The Woman of Cain by composer Fredrik Högberg. The history of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra is characterized by the many young conductors that began their international careers in Norrköping. Herbert Blomstedt and Franz Welser-Möst are the most famous examples, both having been Principal Conductor for the orchestra. Okko Kamu, Junichi Hirokami, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Daniel Harding, Andrew Manze, Andrew Parrott, Michail Jurowski, and Lü Jia are other examples of conductors that have had or continue to have a working relationship with the orchestra. The orchestra also aims to find the young rising stars of the solo world. Sarah Chang, Daniel Röhn, Lisa Batiashvili, Ilya Gringolts, Karen Gomyo, and Julian Bliss are but a few of the names that have performed with the orchestra. Cooperation with the likes of Anne Sophie Mutter, Maxim Vengerov, Viktoria Mullova, Lang Lang, Mischa Maisky and, not least, opera singers like Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Gösta Winbergh, Håkan Hagegård, Malena Ernman, Anne Sofie von Otter, Peter Mattei, and Barbara Bonney results in an explosive combination of both young and established world artists.
