Oslo Cathedral Boys Choir was founded in 1985 on the initiative of Terje Kvam and Carl Høgset. It was not, however, the first boys choir in the history of the cathedral. During the nineteenth century the choir of Oslo Cathedral School sang at services at the cathedral. In the last century cathedral music director Arild Sandvold started a boys choir, known as Oslo Cathedral choir, which sang at the cathedral until about 1940. Since its re-establishment in 1985 the activities of the present boys choir have included concerts, participation in the rich liturgical life of the cathedral, concert tours in Norway and abroad, and joint projects with other boys choirs and various orchestras. The choir collaborates regularly with professional instrumentalists and singers, and each member receives individual singing lessons. The choir is organized in the style of an English cathedral choir where all the boys sing treble and the alto part is sung by counter-tenors. The choirs vocal coach is Helene Haarr, a graduate of Agder University and the Norwegian Opera Academy. In addition to giving individual singing lessons to the choristers she also directs the probationary choir. Helene Haarr pursues an active career as a freelance singer and regularly appears as a soprano soloist in operatic and sacred works.
