Jan Erik Mikalsen (b. 1979) has studied at the Grieg Academy in Bergen and at the Royal Danish Music Academy in Copenhagen. He has had several pieces performed by orchestras, including world premieres by Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. Jan Erik Mikalsen has been performed at festivals such as Presencés Festival, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Ultima Festival, Pablo Casals Festival, Nordic Music Days and Momentum Nordic festival. In 2017 Jan Erik Mikalsen released ‘SAAN’ with three orchestral works performed by Oslo Philharmonic, Norwegian Radio Orchestra and POING. In 2010 the piece Angel Stories was released on the album ‘The Blank Spaces’ with pianist Kristian Lindberg. In 2006 Jan Erik Mikalsen released the album ‘Lights Out’, together with three other Norwegian composers, with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra.

Jan Erik Mikalsen has won prizes like the Tono Edvard Prize 2013, and the piece Parts II won third place in the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2011 with judge Salvatore Sciarrino. The piece Songr won International Rostrum of Composers in 2015.
