Blåmann Blåmann had played together for five years and had loads of performances, festivals and tours behind them when they released their debut album Blåmann Blåmann in 2001. The folk group consists of Odd Nordstoga, Lars Underdal, Silje Hegg and Asgaut Bakken, all established solo musicians and all from Vinje in Telemark. And this is where the group has its musical base: they play folk music from their home community in "arrangments inspired by barbed wire music", according to the quartet itself. The repertoire consists of traditional music such as medieval ballads and traditional folk tunes, but the arrangements are inspired by recent popular music. Blåmann Blåmann handles traditional music with respect, but their approach is unpretentious and playful, and the group has received much praise for having given new pop/rock-life to Norwegian folk music. Blåmann Blåmann has, with humorous and energetic stage performances, earned a big name in the Norwegian folk flora and is known as a major renewal of the Norwegian folk music. May 2011
