Finn Arnestad’s orchestral music takes pride of place in his production. On this album one can get acquainted with several of these works.

A modernist composer

Finn Arnestad was among the Norwegian composers who during the 1950s pitted themselves on the side of modernism against the national folklorism that long dominated Norwegian musical life. Being influenced by composers such as Debussy, Stravinskij, Hindemith and Fartein Valen made him into a composer who mastered a wide range of very different musical idioms and who had a highly personal style.

Although Arnestad composed a number of very fine chamber music works which reveal a uniquely personal idiom, his orchestral music takes pride of place in his production. A brilliant orchestrator, he knew how to take full advantage of the timbral and expressive potential of the orchestra. On this album one can get acquainted with several of these works.
