Rolf Karlsen (1911-1982), who was also a student of Sandvold, was to succeed him as precentor and organist at the Oslo Cathedral in 1966. Through his longstanding effort to renew sacred music in Norway, much of which was connected with the organization Musica Sacra, he held a central position in Norwegian music life. Karlsen and Musica Sacra were particularly interested in spreading information about the Gregorian melody and early Protestant church music. Karlsen won international recognition for his innumerable performances of 16th and 17th century music on original instruments, and he was made an honorary member of the Heinrich Schütz Society in Germany in 1973. Karlsen preferred the classical mechanical organ, and was a strong advocate of preserving valuable old organs in Norway. His compositions reveal his interest in the idioms and form of early music.
