Ingar Bergby is an orchestral conductor specializing in contemporary music, opera and classical music. During the period 2003-2008 he was principal guest conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, with particular responsibility for Nordic repertoire. Since 1999 Bergby has been principal conductor of the Värmlands Opera and Värmlands Opera Sinfonietta. In addition he has been principal conductor of Opera Vest and BIT20 Ensemble for ten years. Ingar Bergby has made numerous CDs and given many first performances with these ensembles, which have toured the Nordic countries as well as England, Germany and France. Bergby studied clarinet with professor Richard Kjelstrup at the Norwegian Academy of Music where he subsequently went on to study orchestral conducting with Karsten Andersen, and later with Jorma Panula in Helsinki. Bergby received his postgraduate diploma in orchestral conducting in 1991, for which he was awarded the highest mark. He has received several awards, among them Artist of the Year 2010 from Norwegian Society of Composers, and stipends including a Government work grant for artists on two separate occasions. In addition to regular engagements with all the leading Norwegian orchestras he has made a number of guest appearances conducting orchestras and opera in Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Germany and the Czech Republic.
