Max Bruch. Det var imidlertid Hurums m\u00f8te med Claude Debussys musikk som fikk st\u00f8rst p\u00e5virkning p\u00e5 hans musikk, og han anerkjennes i dag for sin elegante og virkningsfulle orkesterbehandling. Strykekvartetten op. 6 er klassisk\/romantisk med nasjonale trekk \u2013 og enkelte impresjonistiske islett. I det symfoniske diktet &#8216;Bendik og Aarolilja&#8217; treffer Hurum den dype tragiske grunnstemningen i den gamle kjempevisen, noe han videref\u00f8rer i sin symfoni i d-moll fra 1927.
