What is old is new, and what is new is old<\/p>\n
Five years ago Hardanger fiddle players Benedicte Maurseth and Knut Hamre released their CD\/DVD \u201cRosa i botnen\u201d, a pioneering work in the field of Norwegian folk music. This important project introduced fresh, new perspectives into the way folk music was perceived.The \u201cRosa i botnen\u201d project attracted a good deal of attention and was much discussed in the folk music community. The purely ethical aspect of using these old instruments was the subject of controversy, as was the fact that museums lent these valuable treasures to performers.<\/p>\n
The album was received enthusiastically by the press. The daily newspaper VG gave it six of a possible six points, calling it \u201cone of the most beautiful and powerful Hardanger fiddle records ever made\u201d.<\/p>\n
The CD \u201cAnima\u201d (soul) represents a further development of \u201cRosa i botnen\u201d. Once again they are dusting off the old Hardanger fiddles. This time we are also able to hear the oldest fiddle in Norway, made by Trond Flateb\u00f8 in 1746, which has never been recorded before.<\/p>\n
Maurseth and Hamre invited two classical performers to join them on \u201cAnima\u201d who have specialised in instruments from the same time period. Elisabeth Seitz, from Germany, plays the tympanon (hammered dulcimer) and Philippe Pierlot, from Belgium, plays the viola da gamba. They are both among the leading performers in their fields. The innovative musician and composer Nils \u00d8kland plays fiddles and viola d\u2019amore on the album, and has also contributed a work commissioned by Maurseth and Hamre, \u201c5736\u201d.<\/p>\n

The title refers to the postcode of Hamre\u2019s home village of Granvin, and on the album the piece is found alongside fiddle tunes and early baroque music by Henry Purcell and Tobias Hume, among others. \u201cWriting for this ensemble was a tremendous and exciting challenge,\u201d says Nils \u00d8kland. \u201cThe piece has an open structure, in which the musicians can express themselves in a landscape they feel at home in, with regard to both their instruments and their musical backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n
It is apparent that on \u201cAnima\u201d the musicians are equally concerned with creating something new and relevant as they are with searching for something that is historically correct and authentic. \u201cWhat is old is new, and what is new is old,\u201d Maurseth and Hamre write in the CD booklet.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnima\u201d is presented in a beautiful cover designed by Rune Mortensen, with paintings by Els Geelen. The comprehensive booklet includes an essay by Associate Professor Bj\u00f8rn Aksdal on fiddle makers Isak Nielsen Skaar and Trond Flateb\u00f8.<\/p>\n
