The unique publication has been given a central position in Norwegian music history, both as a mediator of Aslaug Vaa´s writing and as a renewer of Norwegian folk music. The album won a Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy Award), and received much positive attention in the Norwegian and foreign press. The text material on Nivelkinn consists of poems written by poet Aslaug Vaa (1889–1965), tone set and performed by the acclaimed folk musicians Øyonn Groven Myhren and Odd Nordstoga. "Nivelkinn" is a cycle of poems in Vaa’s debut collection Nord i leite (1934) and depicts the triangle drama between Gyri, Stabbe and Jo. The drama is located in Nivelkinn, a fantasy kingdom with clear geographic and linguistic references to Kviteseid, Telemark where Vaa spent most of her childhood. Groven Myhren and Nordstoga have taken inspiration from Norwegian folk music and combined it with more melodic and rhythmic elements from contemporary music directions.

Nivelkinn – Norwegian folk poetry made over

Comission Work

Norwegian singers Øyonn Groven Myhren and Odd Nordstoga released the album Nivelkinn earlier this year. Nivelkinn is an epic poem written by Aslaug Vaa, one of Norway’s finest traditional folk story writers. Myhren and Nordstoga wrote music to the poem on request by the Telemark festival and the performance was a great success.

Aslaug Vaa´s Nivelkinn

Nivelkinn is taken from Vaa’s book of poetry Nord i Leite. It’s about a passionate love triangle, which takes place in rural nineteen century Norway. Myhren and Nordstoga wrote soft ballads and faster pieces of traditional music inspired by the poem and made an innovating, yet traditional performance. The unusual instrumentation that included wooden harps, washboards and lyre, combined with Myhren and Nordstogas beautiful voices made for a breathtaking showcase.

Successful Project

The first performance at the Telemark festival (cultural event focusing on traditional Norwegian folk music) in 2001 blew both critics and audiences away. And even though Nivelkinn was never meant to be released on CD, the pressure from the people who had seen the show got so intense, that they felt compelled to put it out. Myhren and Nordstoga are both well-known traditional folk singers in Norway, dedicated in keeping the old Norwegian songs and lays alive.

[35

0":"post-689","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-heilo","7":"product_shipping_class-cddvd-shipping","8":"uni_artist_tag-leiv-solberg","9":"uni_artist_tag-odd-nordstoga","10":"uni_artist_tag-oyonn-groven-myhren","11":"uni_main_artist_tag-odd-nordstoga","12":"uni_artist_genre-folk-music","13":"uni_artist_genre-traditional","15":"first","16":"outofstock","17":"taxable","18":"shipping-taxable","19":"purchasable","20":"product-type-simple
["GET
