The result is a record that makes it sound as if Norwegian folk music has always been electronic\u2014and perhaps it could have been?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Through traces of electro-halling, disco-gangar, and springar drum\u2019n\u2019bass, Lien and Center of the Universe explore a fascinating idea: What if electronic folk music had been an unbroken tradition, stretching all the way from the 1960s experiments of Folque, Saft, and Sigbj\u00f8rn Bernhoft Osa\u2014through Annbj\u00f8rg Lien\u2019s early releases\u2014and into today\u2019s flourishing interest in Norwegian folk, roots, and tradition?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The duo\u2019s new album combines traditional<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>sl\u00e5tter<\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and dance rhythms from<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>gangar<\/em>,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>springar<\/em>, and<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>halling<\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>with traditional instruments like the jaw harp (<em>munnharpe<\/em>) and Hardanger fiddle (<em>hardingfele<\/em>), paired with electronic staples from house and techno such as the TB-303 and Roland 909. It\u2019s music not only to listen to, but to dance to\u2014seeking to extend tradition rather than break with it. This is no nostalgic journey, but a living experiment in how electronic production can enhance and revitalize Norwegian folk music.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Kenneth Lien<\/strong><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>is a multi-instrumentalist with roots in black metal and improvised rock. He plays a wide range of traditional folk instruments including fiddle, Hardanger fiddle, willow flute (<em>seljefl\u00f8yte<\/em>), and most notably the jaw harp. He is best known from the trio \u00c6vestaden and has made his mark on the folk competition scene with several jaw harp victories.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>J\u00f8rgen Skjulstad<\/strong><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>is a musician and DJ also known as<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Center of the Universe<\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>or<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>DJ Sissyfus<\/em>.
