The voice from the North<\/p>\n
She came from the distant M\u00e5lselv in northern Norway. Her unique talent was discovered by a music-loving officer of the Norwegian army in 1940, urging her to get voice lessons. Fortunately for us, she took his advice. 10. June 2003 we celebrate the 80th birthday of Aase Nordmo L\u00f8vberg, presenting this CD with some of the finest performances from her entire career. 1957 saw Aase Nordmo L\u00f8vberg\u2019s debut at the Vienna Staatsoper, hand picked by Karajan. He had heard her first in a recording of Grieg\u2019s Haugtussa. The same year she performed for the first time in USA with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and in 1959 she was engaged for four seasons at the Metropolitan Opera House doing Leonore, Elsa, Sieglinde and Eva. In 1960 she was of course at the Bayreuth Festspiele, with great success.<\/p>\n

There is something about voices that make a very special imprint in the minds of the listener. Voices touch us immediately \u2013 we relate and interpret as a matter of course, whether it is to the voice of a speaker or a singer. In this respect we are all natural experts on the understanding and interpretation of voice, maybe one reason why audiences throughout music history react so ecstatically when they come across the voice.<\/p>\n
It was the opera in Stockholm that \u2018found\u2019 her first. After a stunning 1948 debut in Oslo, a concert that had to be repeated \u2013 twice \u2013 because of the fantastic reception, Aase Nordmo L\u00f8vberg became a permanent member of the cast from 1954 until 1969. Together with such names as Jussi Bj\u00f6rling, Birgit Nilsson and Nicolai Gedda she embodied the \u2018golden age\u2019 of the Stockholm opera.<\/p>\n
