No boundaries. On his third solo album for HUBRO, string magician Stein Urheim, based in Berlin, Bergen and Strandebarm, really gets\u00a0serious about honing his complex expressive skills. His previous album garnered excellent reviews internationally, and has\u00a0become a force to reckon with among listeners.\u00a0\u00a0Urheim plays an impressive number of string instruments on the album, but we can\u00a0also hear several tracks featuring vocals, harmonica, pocket cornet and tape experiments, while producer J\u00f8rgen Tr\u00e6en makes a contribution on\u00a0modular synth. Urheim has had an interest in Norwegian folk music for a long time. Together with Benedicte Maurseth he won first prize in\u00a0the \u201copen class\u201d category in the National Contest for Traditional Music in 2013, and on \u201cStrandebarm\u201d he interprets a Norwegian fiddle tune\u00a0for the first time on an album.\u00a0In the course of his life as a musician Stein Urheim has gathered impressions and input from a musical world\u00a0that knows no boundaries, and on this album he presents some of the most exceptional and exciting treasures he has discovered along the way\u00a0\u2013 all filtered, naturally, through his distinctive musical temperament. In the course of his life as a musician Stein Urheim has gathered impressions and input from a musical world that knows no boundaries, and on this album he presents some of the most exceptional and exciting treasures he has discovered along the way \u2013 all filtered, naturally, through his distinctive musical temperament. This is strikingly personal music, which could most likely not have been made at any other time in history. The tonal point of departure for the compositions on this record is reminiscent of French music of the early 1900s and American ragtime and standards of the 1920s and 30s. The soundscape combines acoustic and electronic elements to generate a compelling result. Urheim is thoughtful and meditative without being withdrawn or sombre.<\/p>\n
\u201cStrandebarm\u201d\u00a0was recorded in Strandebarm Church, not far from the house where\u00a0Urheim has stayed for long periods of time in recent years.\u00a0This\u00a0space was chosen primarily because of its inspiring acoustics, and\u00a0the music was recorded, as on the previous album, by sound technician\u00a0Audun Strype. The recording was finalised and mixed at Duper Studio\u00a0in Bergen by technician and producer J\u00f8rgen Tr\u00e6en, who also\u00a0collaborated very successfully with Urheim on the previous album. \u201cStrandebarm\u201d\u00a0is Stein Urheim\u2019s third release as a solo artist, and also his\u00a0third release on the HUBRO label. He has also released three\u00a0critically acclaimed duo albums on Bugge Wesseltoft\u2019s Jazzland\u00a0label, together with vocalist and instrumentalist Mari Kvien\u00a0Brunvoll. Urheim\u00a0has also been a member of Gabriel Fliflet\u2019s band\u00a0\u00c5resong and HP Gundersen\u2019s critically lauded drone band The Last\u00a0Hurrah. On Sunday 20 March Stein\u00a0Urheim will present a new commissioned work, \u201cTravelling With the\u00a0Natural Cosmolodic Orchestra\u201d, at the Voss\u00a0Jazz Festival together\u00a0with Per J\u00f8rgensen, Kjetil M\u00f8ster, Mari Kvien Brunvoll, Ole Morten\u00a0V\u00e5gan and K\u00e5re Opheim.<\/p>\n
