From the tragic eloquence of the \u201cPrelude and Fugue\u201d, to the youthful enthusiasm of the tribute to his old compositional teacher in \u201cVariations on a Theme of Frank Bridge\u201d or the return to his musical themes written as a child in \u201cSimple Symphony\u201d, The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra delivers an exquisite performance on this recording. <\/p>\n<p>Also included on this album is violist Lars Anders Tomter\u00b4s recordings of Britten\u00b4s last completed original composition, \u201cLachrymae\u201d, showing off the composer\u00b4s mastery of variation techniques in an eloquent work that surely ranks as his masterpieces, and Britten\u00b4s \u201cElegy\u201d, one of his many laments of a lost childhood or irrecoverable innocence. Certainly the piece has more to it than a boyish indulgence in melancholy.
