Arctic brass<\/p>\n
Performed by the ensemble Arctic Brass, this album opens with Paul Hindemith\u00b4s \u201cMorgenmusik\u201d, a typical example of the composer\u00b4s Sing- und Spielmusik, closely related to the town musicians\u00b4 \u201ctower music\u201d of the 17th century \u2013 a fresh and unspoilt piece of morning music. Alexander Arutunian\u00b4s \u201cArmenian Scenes\u201d has rapidly become a standard work for brass ensembles all over the world. With a traditional Armenian tone language, the work continually surprises us with its ingenuity and sense of humour. Supplemented by tambourine and Armenian drum, performed by Einar Fj\u00e6rvoll, the work\u00b4s exotic character is highlighted. The Norwegian composer and pianist Wolfgang Plagge is also a guest musician on the album, on his own piece \u201cCanzona\u201d, a one-movement work with clearly contrasting sections, formally linked to 17th century canzonas. Furthermore, Arctic Brass also performs Olav Berg\u00b4s \u201cBrass Quintet\u201d, a work filled bold harmonies and chromatic melodies that demands a real mastery of the instrument, Charles Ives\u00b4 \u201cFour Songs\u201d, bringing us into a more humorous musical sphere with arrangements by Kenneth Singleton, and Mogens Andresen\u00b4s \u201cThree Norwegian Dances for Brass\u201d, which includes the popular Norwegian melody \u201cPer Spelmann\u201d in addition to a Rhinelander and a R\u00f8ros rustic dance.<\/p>\n
