The contemporary oboe<\/p>\n
From having been one of the most popular solo instruments in the Baroque era, the decline of the oboe as solo instrument was rapid. When Mozart composed his oboe concerto in 1777 it was the last concerto for oboe by any major composer for 168 years. By the 19th century, the role of the oboe had become that of a solo voice within the orchestra and as such romantic composers showed great love and understanding for the instrument. Later, in the 20th century, the composers Richard Strauss, Bohuslav Martinu and Jean Francaix would write beautiful music for the instrument. Three of these works are featured on this album.<\/p>\n
On his fourth recording for Simax Classics, the sought-after oboist Gregor Zubicky teams up with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste to record Strauss\u00b4 \u201cConcerto in D for Oboe and Small Orchestra\u201d, Martinu\u00b4s \u201cConcerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra\u201d and Francaix\u00b4 \u201cL\u00b4horloge de flore\u201d. Being both physically demanding and technically difficult, Strauss\u00b4 piece is one of his most perfect and charming works with more than brilliant cadenzas. Equally beautiful is Martinu\u00b4s work, skilfully utilizing the oboe over its entire range, giving the soloist every opportunity to display the oboe\u00b4s possibilities, both technical and musical. Finally, Francaix\u00b4 \u201cL\u00b4horloge de flore\u201d is a seven-movement piece played without a break, inspired by the Swedish botanist Carl von Linn\u00e9\u00b4s classification of flowers.<\/p>\n
