The Third Bly de Blyant album<\/p>\n
Drummer \u00d8yvind Skarb\u00f8\u2019s trio Bly de Blyant, with Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson and Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily (Marc Ribot, Will Oldham, John Zorn), have received glowing reviews for their two previous albums, \u201cABC\u201d\u00a0and \u201cHindsight Bias\u201d. On their third album, called simply \u201cThe Third Bly de Blyant Album\u201d, they have brought in percussionist Ches Smith (Marc Ribot, Mr. Bungle, Xiu Xiu) as a guest, and together they take the music in a whole new direction. The band\u2019s third album is their most cohesive release to date.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0Third Bly de Blyant Album\u201d, however, was recorded directly on tape\u00a0in a side room in Jakob Church in Bergen, and very little recording\u00a0of additional tracks or editing was carried out afterwards. The\u00a0soundscape is more naked and acoustic this time. The expression is\u00a0also more disciplined, but the band is still brimming with creative\u00a0power.<\/p>\n
While the band formerly went into the studio\u00a0with only sketches and simple ideas for songs, and let the music take\u00a0shape in the studio, this time more of the material consisted of\u00a0finished compositions. \u201cBesides the two tracks we created together\u00a0(\u2018Min mor er kvikk\u2019 and \u2018Handi\u2019), Hilmar had written a song\u00a0(\u2018Tundra\u2019), and I wrote the rest,\u201d says \u00d8yvind\u00a0Skarb\u00f8. He was\u00a0imagining the sound of a vibraphone while composing. \u201cI have been a\u00a0fan of Ches Smith\u2019s playing, and of his various bands, for a long\u00a0time. I knew that both Shahzad and Hilmar were familiar with him\u00a0already.\u201d When it transpired that Ches was going to play together\u00a0with Shahzad at Nattjazz in Skarb\u00f8\u2019s home town, Bergen, in the\u00a0band\u00a0Marc Ribot\u2019s Ceramic Dog, and that on top of that Hilmar was\u00a0going to play with Arve Henriksen and Skuli Sverrisson at the same\u00a0festival, plans for a new album began to take form.<\/p>\n
