Elisabeth Vatn – The Color Beneath<\/p>\n
\u00abThe Color Beneath\u00bb from the musician and composer Elisabeth Vatn was recorded to James Turrell light installations Skys Pace and Ganzfeld in Ekeberg Parken, Oslo.<\/p>\n
In the old water reservoir in Ekeberg Parken, the American artist James Turrell created in 2013 a two site-specific artworks. In Ganzfeld: Double Vision you can experience how the artist’s use of color works on our perception. In SkySpace: The Color Beneath you can experience in connection with the sunrise and the sunset, a wonderful play of colors between the room you are sitting in and the sky above. Turrell’s background is clearly present in his SkySpaces. These are the places where people meet and greet the light welcome.<\/p>\n

In THE COLOR BENEATH, the sound of harmonium, bagpipes, langeleik, fiddles and old clarinets becomes a drone field wich waves around and goes up in the constantly changing color games. Sustained drones, slow themes and contemplative sounds, the sound of wood, metal and pedal pumping playing with the room’s acoustics. Elisabeth Vatn recorded \u00abThe Color Beneath\u00bb with Anders R\u00f8ine live in SkySpace and Ganzfelt autumn 2014, and the album is being released during Ultima 2015.

Elisabeth Vatn (Norwegian musician\/composer, f. 1973). Originally a classically educated pianist, who also plays different organs, harmoniums, clarinettes and Nordic bagpipes . As a performer, Vatn has been active across the genre spectrum, performing in classical settings, with improv ensembles, in pop\/rock groups as well as a wide variety of traditional folk music outfits. Vatn began her bagpipe career during a stay in Macedonia in 1993. Later she would learn of the existence of a Nordic\/Swedish variant of the instrument and Vatn is currently one of the instrument\u2019s few practitioners \u2013 having put down a considerable effort into the work of preserving the Swedish bag-pipe tradition and finding a contemporary context for the distinct instrument\u2019s rich timbre.
\nVatn has released critically acclaimed albums with such ensembles as Tigerlily, Chateu Neuf Spelemannslag and Harnihomba. As a classical performer she put out a duo piano recording of Messiaen\u2019s \u2018Visions de L\u2019Amen\u2019. Piper on the Roof is Elisabeth Vatn\u2019s latest bagpipe ensemble which album-debuted to critical acclaim 2009. Additional projects includes Stave Church Songs \u2013 Martyred Saints and Sister Bells, Lux Illuxit. and a string of solo live performances.
\nAmong Vatn\u2019s recent productions are Lux Illuxit \u2013 St. Olavs Officium, which premiered in the spring of 2014, and her newest CD with her own compositions, The Color Beneath, which was recorded at Ekeberg Skyspace and Ganzfeld.<\/p>\n
James Turrell (born 1942) is an American artist who works with light, colors and space. With permanent installations in 26 countries, he arguably leads his field. Turrell obtained a college degree in psychology before he turned to an art education. He has spent many years working with light and space. His installations show a common trait in that they tend to encompass the spectators, so that the light and color effects they experience are controlled ny the artist’s concept.
\nIn 2013, Turrell used the old water reservoir in the Ekeberg Park to create to location-specific works. In Ganzfeld: Double Vision the artist makes use of colors to influence our perceptions. During dawns and sunsets, Skyspace: The Color Beneath create a magnificent communion between the room you sit in and the sky above. Turrells background is very much present in his Skyspaces.<\/p>\n
