Mj\u00f8lsnes opens and closes the\u00a0album with his own compositions, which were inspired by, and hold references to, the pieces Sagen\u00a0played.<\/p>\n<p>Mj\u00f8lsnes discovered the tunes by fiddler Anders Sagen from Berge in Kyrkjeb\u00f8, Sogn, several years ago while leafing\u00a0through \u201cHardingfeleverket\u201d (Norsk folkemusikk, series I: Hardingfelesl\u00e5ttar, Universitetsforlaget, Oslo). A piece with\u00a0an unusual tuning attracted his attention.\u00a0\u201cI noted that the tune was attributed to Anders Haga, Gamlehagen, from\u00a0Voss. This was the area my traditions were drawn from, so I had to learn that tune,\u201d\u00a0writes Mj\u00f8lsnes in his cover\u00a0notes for this album. The tune was \u201cEldgamal springar\u201d as played by Anders Sagen, transcribed by Arne Bj\u00f8rndal.<\/p>\n<p>During his period as official musician of Hordaland County, Einar Mj\u00f8lsnes had the opportunity to work with these fiddle tunes\u00a0with a view to recording them, and this album is the result of several years of in-depth study of the material.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Einar Mj\u00f8lsnes (b. 1952) is a very highly regarded musician and arranger\/composer. He has been engaged at the Ole Bull Academy\u00a0in Voss and as the official musician for Hordaland County. Among his works as a composer is a piece commissioned for the Osa\u00a0Festival in 1998. He studied at Veitvet Music Conservatory and the Bergen Music Conservatory (now the Grieg Academy).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0this new album musician and composer Einar Mj\u00f8lsnes (Hardanger\u00a0fiddle) from Voss has gathered\u00a0all of the 21 tunes played by Anders\u00a0Sagen that have been transcribed. Mj\u00f8lsnes opens and closes the\u00a0album with his own compositions, which were inspired by, and hold\u00a0references to, the pieces Sagen\u00a0played.<\/p>\n<h4>Anders Sagen<\/h4>\n<p>There\u00a0are a total of 21 fiddle tunes here, and the transcribed notes are\u00a0found in Arne Bj\u00f8rndal\u2019s collection in Bergen.\u00a0Nineteen of them\u00a0were included in \u201cHardingfeleverket\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u00a0discovered that there were a number of tunes as played by Anders\u00a0Sagen, many of them passed down from\u00a0\u2018Gamlehagen\u2019, and in a wide\u00a0range of tunings.\u201d Sagen had learned most of the tunes from Rognald\u00a0Berge from\u00a0Kyrkjeb\u00f8 in Sogn. Berge, in turn, had learned them from\u00a0\u201cGamlehagen\u201d. \u201cI have the impression that Sagen\u00a0preserved the\u00a0tunes as he had learned them, so his playing represents the old form\u00a0of fiddle tunes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sagen\u00a0was born in Berge in Kyrkjeb\u00f8 in 1829, the son of Gj\u00f8a Nilsdotter\u00a0Berge (1800-1883) and Haavard J\u00f8rgenson\u00a0Lokrein (1800-1848) from\u00a0Valdres, who was himself a proficient fiddler. Anders was born out of\u00a0wedlock, and his\u00a0mother later married Lars \u00d8vreberge (b. 1805).\u00a0Anders played at their wedding.<\/p>\n<p>Anders\u00a0Sagen began playing the fiddle at the age of 11. His teacher was\u00a0Rognald Berge (1797-1885), and he later\u00a0studied with Jens Fresvik\u00a0(1817-1886), also known as Jens H\u00f8gheim or \u201cSkrangle-Jens\u201d\u00a0(\u201cRattling Jens\u201d). Sagen is\u00a0said to have played at around 100\u00a0weddings, so he was obviously a very sought-after fiddler. The trio won a\u00a0Spelemannspris\u00a0(Norwegian Grammy) in 2005 in the category folk music\/gammeldans for\u00a0their debut album,\u00a0\u201cGamaltnymalt\u201d. Since 2005 he has played in\u00a0the group T\u00f8rvikbygd, a folk music trio playing music from\u00a0Hardanger.\u00a0Einar Mj\u00f8lsnes has performed at concerts in various\u00a0connections, including Vossa Jazz, Telemarkfest, the F\u00f8rde\u00a0Traditional and Folk Music Festival, the Vestfold International\u00a0Festival and the Osa Festival.
