The Maggini in Haydn

Widely regarded as one of the UK´s premier string quartets, the Maggini Quartet has since its formation in 1988 received immediate acclaim for the depth and accomplishment of their interpretations. After several highly successful tours in 1991 and 1992, the quartet sat down in the studio to record three of Joseph Haydn´s String Quartets of the Op. 33. Luckily, these are available on this very album.

Opening good-humouredly with a perfect cadence in pianissimo, String Quartet no. 5 is set for surprises. But Haydn bides his time, striking again with dynamic extremes and unnerving silences. Whether Haydn sought consciously to make a contrast between the ending of one quartet and the beginning of the next it certainly exists in the String Quartet no. 1. The choice of the minor tonality brings out the most serious side of Haydn and he seems unable, or rather unwilling, to break free from this mood throughout the whole quartet. The final quartet on this album, the String Quartet, no. 2, repeatedly fools the listener as to whether the piece has ended or not, giving it the fitting nickname “The Joke”.
