An important common factor with these composers is the fact that they all have their background as professional, performing musicians. Stalheim’s accordion playing is truly brilliant, while Lunde Jr. was solo oboist with the Norwegian Opera for many years. Hagerup Bull started out as a pianist and organist, Berg worked as a trumpet player for many years and finally Vaage started out as a jazz pianist. This of course gives them a certain edge when it comes to realizing their music in practical terms.
Jostein Stalheim has been labelled a modern exponent for a Haydn-esque elegance, and Hidden Music (2003) is brilliantly conceived in a sort of rondo form. The title work of the album, Chromos (1999) by Ivar Lunde Jr,. is a flighty and impressionistic piece. The (1999) is typical of the mature style of Edvard Hagerup Bull.
Gro Sandvik was solo flutist with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 to 2005. She is a member of the Bergen Woodwind Quintet with numerous concerts and tours all over the world, and with several CDs. At present she is Visiting Professor of Flute, The University of Iowa School of Music, USA, and Professor of Flute at the Grieg Academy in Bergen. Einar Røttingen´s recording of Grieg’s Ballade in G minor was recently awarded Recording of the Year by the Grieg Society of Lonon. His many recordings have received great international acclaim. Røttingen is Professor of Piano at the Grieg Academy, Bergen.

Serious fun…

With his Moments, Olav Berg touches on the improvisational in his music. Knut Vaage’s Fortuna is written, as indeed is Hidden Music, in close collaboration with the performers on this release. The music has the ambience of serious playfulness, the first movement resembling a jigsaw puzzle for flute and the piano.
