Trond Sæverud – Ghost

‘Ghost’ is a live recording of Trond Sæverud’s (b. 1962) solo concert on November 11th. 1995 at the National Museumfor Contemporary Art in Oslo, Norway. The concert, containing four works by three Norwegian composers, starts off with ‘Violino Solo’ by Ketil Hvoslef (b. 1939). To ensure that the violin sings as naturally as possible, Hvoslef has employed musical material from his own earlier vocal works.
In ‘Partita für Paul’, Arne Nordheim (b. 1931) approaches the idea of eternity. Nordheim has in this work created music to 5 works of the art by Paul Klee, allowing each painting its own movement. By employing various sound effects on the instrument Nordheim’s music establishes close associations to the textures in the paintings.
The last two works of the concert ‘Tv-spill 1’ (tv-games 1) and ‘Ghosts in my life’ are both specially composed for Trond Sæverud by Glenn Erik Haugland (b. 1961). ‘Tv-spill 1’ is the first part of a trilogy fantasizing on our relation to the television medium. The concert ends with the work from which the title for the CD has derived: ‘Ghosts in my life’ – a composition for solo violin with quite different intentions than the previous work. Here Haugland plays with the illusion of polyphony juxtaposed against simple expressivity.
