“Birds of the Heart is our hopes and yearnings.” Lasse Thoresen

Bird of the Heart was commissioned and performed for the first time by the Oslo Trio during Bergen Festival 1982. The audience, as well as the composer himself was roused by this splendid performance. The critics, too, were generous in their praise. This recording was based on the revised version of the trio, incorporating an expanded violin solo in the last movement. The revision was made in the fall of 1982. Lasse Thoresen formulates his idea about the trio thus: "Birds of the Heart is our hopes and yearnings. In the light of despair it goes astray, but in the end it is able to attain the dawn of reality."

The composer´s own comments on the work With an Open Hand or a Clenched Fist are as follows: ”Composed rather impulsively in the autumn of 1976, the piece reflects my state of mind at that time. However, although the work´s message is extremely emotionally charged, all the material is consistently drawn from a small melodic core, which is clad in different intervals, transposed and transformed within the framework of a synthetic modus. In the middle section, the flutist taps out the meter with his foot (”footnotes”). Both this effect and the rhythm itself have been inspired by Norwegian folk music.

The Garden: ”The composer comments on the work: ”The music is built around a text by the Persian thinker ´Abdu´l-Bahá:

At the gate of the garden some stand
and look within, but do not care to enter.
Others step inside, behold its beauty,
but do not penetrate far.
Still others encircle the garden, inhaling
the fragrance of the flowers, but,
having enjoyed its full beauty,
pass out again by the same gate.
But there are always some who enter
and becoming intoxicated with the splendour
of what they behold, remain for life
to tend the garden.
