«Certainty and doubt»

Kåre Kolberg (f. 1936) has been a versatile and committed asset within Norwegian cultural life ever since he started his career as a composer in the early 1960’s. His prime concern as a writer has been the role of contemporary music in society, and how it relates to the public. This aspect is reflected in his music. From being experimental and polemic in the 60’s, his music of the 70’s and 80’s is easier on the ear. The later works of the 90’s reveal a rougher and more complex Kolberg, and some of the works on this recording thus hark back to his modernistic point of departure.

Kolberg music shows great scope, but we always sense the uniqe expression where certain elements are more than common. Repetitive notes, alternating pitches and rhythmical ostinatos. Striving melodic gestures. Wit and irony, particularly common in the works of the 60’s and 70’s. Kolberg exploits the full range of the ensemble, dividing the instruments in unison layers of multiple octaves, or in dense clusters. It is, however, the manner in which the elements are composed and interact that create the characteristic sound.
