Aria in Aria

Kåre Kolberg has developed a style and technique of composition during the past 20 years which exemplifies his personality as an artist. His compositions from the mid-1960’s, such as String Quartet and Plym Plym, differ greatly from works like Aria in Aria and For the Time Being, both of which were written in the mid-1980’s. An expansive development during this period is evident at the same time as there are common characteristics which represent Kolberg’s expressive potential.

In «Aria in Aria», composed in 1983/84, the musical material derives from the music written by Kolberg for a television theatre production of Ibsen’s «The Master Builder». The composer felt that this material had potential for further use exceeding the framework of the television theathre production. The piece does not describe Ibsen’s play or scenes from the play, but is rather a free development of the musical material which proved to be usable also in this newer context.

«For the Time Being» was composed in 1984 for a double vocal quartet. The piece was originally written for and dedicated to the vocal ensemble Electric Phoenix. Guided improvisation, made up from the constant repetition of motifs, is the principal idea in the composition. «For the Time Being» is a clear expression of the minimalistic technique that Kolberg has developed, with a prominent use of ostinato as an element of form used to create musical tension.
