Modern tonality

The four works on this record are all central works in the production of the composer Johan Kvandal. Kvandal has through his long lifes work become a nestor on the Norwegian music scene. With his roots both in norwegian folk music and in the european classical music, he has become an important bridge-builder, one of the most important representatives for norwegian contemporary music even. Kvandal is – with other words- both nationally oriented, an innovator and a cosmopolite. He has never let go of tonality as his most important fundament, but is’nt bound to the major/minor system. He picks up elements from the modal scales of folk music, and creates by use of quint and quarter harmonics a mildly dissonant style , which he likes to call «modern tonality». In this idiom the harmonic functions are prominent eanough, but the sense of tonal center is vague, somthing thats also characteristic for norwegian folk music.
