Fascinating, detailed and riveting

Helge Iberg’s musical expression is fascinating, detailed and riveting. Several of the most prominent Norwegian composers – with Ole Edvard Antonsen taking the lead – interprets new music from Iberg on this exquisite recording.

Helge Iberg was a so-called ‘musical prodigy’, but had his career cut short due to a neurological problem. As a composer he has moved via the landscapes of jazz to the art music’s refined music sheets.

“Dromo Dance” is written for – and in collaboration with – Ole Edvard Antonsen trying to utilize his entire technical and musical span. In this concert, Iberg searches for the lyrical and fresh trumpet sound usually connected with a musical expression heard in jazz. The poet Rolf Jacobsen was in his day a bold modernist both in form and choice of words. Odd Børretzen reads his poems in the piece “Three Songs to Poems by Rolf Jacobsen”. The music for the poems is obviously influenced by both a jazz-inspired tone language and the modern art musical way of thinking. In the orchestral work “Aren’t We All Warriors In Our Own Life?”, Iberg takes us on a ‘guided tour’ in an abstract musical narrative; a clarification of the music’s relation to existential motifs.
