"New wine in old jars"

Egil Hovland has written seven concertos. In spite of the time span of more than thirty years from the first to the last of them, they present several striking similarities. Regardless of his general stylistic preferences at the moment, for his concertos he always sticks to the same pattern: a solo part idiomatically conceived for the instrument in question, an imaginative and colourful exploitation of the orchestra, first and last movements in which dance-like and often humorous themes are treated with a propulsive energy which are now and then opposed to more melancholy moments of calm meditation. On this album we are treated with three of Hovland´s magnificent concertos, performed by Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and Moscow Symphony Orchestra.

In contrast to symphonic works such as “Lamenti”, where Hovland addresses the fundamental issues of our existence, his concertos reveal no such aspirations, nor does he ask us to concentrate on intricate musical problems. He simply wants us to entertain and make us happy. These works are not radically contemporary, they are, in his own words, “new wine in old jars.”
