The cultivation of the idiosyncratic

One is immediately struck by the distinctivenss of each of the six works recorded by the chamber ensemble BIT 20 on the album “Norwegian Signatures”. So, what now of the specifically “Norwegian” in these musical signatures? Perhaps we may posit a “Norwegian-ness” residing precisely in this distinctiveness, in the cultivation of the idiosyncratic; the personal signature. And, of a piece with the land´s folklore and the society at large, contemporary Norwegian art, we may surmise, is a banner under whose soldiers march very much to their own drummer. “Norwegian Signatures” features six composers – Olav Berg, Kåre Kolberg, Yngve Slettholm, Håkon Berge, Magnar Åm and Glenn Erik Haugland – who range in mutually distinct stylistic directions. In the rare musical topography into which one embarks listening to this album, it is enough to simply remark the marvellous fecundity in the broad sweeps and side-trails these musical outsiders trace! BIT 20 moves simply about here in the musical landscape, directing our attention in an undogmatic way to that Norwegian-ness that is our interesting object of inquiry.

The chamber ensemble BIT 20 was founded in Bergen, Norway, in 1989 by several musicians from different more or less haphazard ensembles that tackled contemporary repertoire with considerable zest. The ensemble´s musicians cover the repertoire´s entire range – from works of solo format to those of sinfonietta dimensions, where all the orchestral instruments are represented, and BIT 20 has since its formation established itself as a polished ensemble with unusually good solistic qualities. “Norwegian Signatures” is the third release in a series of albums published in collaboration with the Norwegian Composer´s Society.
