Magic Islands – The chamber music of Arne Nordheim

The chamber works on this recording chart Arne Nordheim’s stylistic and thematic development, from his promising early debut to his undisputed position today as the most significant Norwegian composer.

Nordheim’s international reputation and his openness towards new forms of expression were such that his music and his attitudes became an important corrective to the dominant folk-nationalistic aesthetic. From an early point on he was widely regarded as an enfant terrible in Norwegian music life, and with his interest in new impulses from the Continent, as one of the avant-garde’s spearheads in Scandinavia. In hindsight, we can see that Nordheim’s agitation was a justifiable one, directed at a rather shallow and empty-handed aesthetic and writing style then dominant. Nordheim’s search was for an expressive medium whose rejection of tradition was provisional and not absolute; any elements serviceable to the new expressive paradigms were to be retained.
